A new era for vampire literature?

Is Anne Rice considering writing another Vampire Chronicle? In particular, is she considering writing about Lestat again?

If you read her fan page on Facebook as avidly as I have, then, in all likelihood, this thought has crossed your mind as well. It’s been going on for a while really and it’s all speculation. Anne has verified on numerous occasions that she has no intention of re-entering that part of her writing career.

Then again, posts such as this:

“If you ever picture Lestat, how do you see him? What is he wearing? How do you picture his hair? Do you picture a facial expression, an attitude? Do you see him in a particular setting?”

Or this:

“The contemporary actor who most embodies my beloved Lestat for me is Anson Mount in “Hell On Wheels.” That’s Lestat peering out from those eyes and with all that long tangled hair. Happy Valentine’s Day to Anson Mount. (Are there any fans of the show who wouldn’t love to see Mr. Bohannon all cleaned up in a black velvet frockcoat with lace at the throat, and shining clean hair?)”

Or even this:

“Happy Valentine’s Day, People of the Page. And Happy Valentine’s Day to Lestat de Lioncourt, my true love. Lestat, I am your Number one fan. No one will ever topple me from that position.”

… Kind of give us the indication that these characters and the worlds they inhabit are not completely gone from her mind.

One can only hope, really.

There have been talks of a new Vampire Chronicles movie in pre-production, but it occurs to me that someone may just be toying with our emotions. It was rumoured at one point that Robert Downey Jr. was to play Lestat – the self-styled ‘hero’ of the chronicles – but not much further has been uncovered in that regard.

A reboot of The Vampire Chronicles would probably be just what we need to remind people of what vampires actually are; monsters with humanity (which occasionally only makes them more monstrous), not sparkly, big-haired forest-folk that climb trees and emotionally abuse their spouses’.

There’ a new vampire movie currently in the works based on the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead – have you read the books? I like the fact that her vampire world harkens back to the Russian and Romanian lore but they’re definitely for a teen audience. Still, I think any new vampire movie without sparkle Ed will be great!

I haven’t read it, apparently I’m becoming quite picky in my old age. But I’ll give it a bash, it sounds intriguing when you put it like that 🙂
And I agree about ol’ Eddie. The next person who’s lips start framing the word twilight when I mention I like vampires is going to get socked in the face.

Not to mention, there have been more than just rumours that The Historian will get a movie of its own as well.

Did you enjoy that? I’m kind of the fence about it… I do want to read Julie Kagawa’s Immortal series though – have you read that?

I did indeed… But as you said, anything to remove the Twilight stigma. Not yet… Sigh, so many things to read, so little time.

i’d love another vampire book by anne rice. and that’s an understatement! 😉
but somehow, i’m not too hopeful. from her facebook posts, it kind of sounds more like she’s planning on a TV series or movie, not another novel. and what with the sequel to “wolf gift” being out and her all enmeshed in that world… hm, i try hard not to be too hopeful but this world is in dire need of another brilliant anne rice vampire novel!

With that assessment I must agree. It would be lovely if she wrote another one, but I don’t see much hope of that happening.
I had hope for a new film to be in the pipelines as well, but she recently stated that that also doesn’t seem likely 🙁

To write another novel would be strangely odd. Not that I am against it, mind you. I would love to see Letstat again. But to think of the changes he would have made over these years. It makes one hesitate to think of a new Lestat novel. However, were Anne to write another novel, I am on board and captaining the support ship.

I quite agree. I know I say I would love another novel, but in saying so I feel relatively safe in the knowledge that the chances are small. I am one of the few people (I think) who feel that the series ended where it should and ended perfectly.
